The problem with the court giving corporations the same constitutional rights (the right to free speech and defining money as speech) as people have is that corporations are driven solely by short-term profit interests that includes putting competitors out of business, cheapest labor costs, cheap resources extraction, etc. and corporate practices are often not under the control of any government, for instance when US corporations have moved many of their plants and farms to Mexico to take advantage of cheaper labor and lack of environmental regulations, thus putting small Mexican farmers and businesses out of business, laying off many thousands of US workers, causing a big migration from Mexico to the US, etc. etc.
On the other hand people have DNA that makes us care about the future of our children and their children and also have empathy for other people.
The fact that this court decision overturns not only many many state campaign finance laws, but federal campaign finance laws and eliminates the ability of state and federal lawmakers to control campaign finance spending, makes our situation even more dire economically than it is now after the financial effects of banks and insurance companies selling subprime mortgages to people who could not afford them and reselling these questionable loans as securities, giving them AAA ratings they did not deserve, spending more money on bonuses to their top executives than it would cost to give health care to every person in the US while US taxpayers ran up a huge deficit to bail them out, as began in the Bush administration, but unfortunately continued by the Obama administration (although some say it was necessary to keep world markets from collapsing.) The list of corporate misdeeds and shortsightedness is endless.
Corporations cannot have the same constitutional rights as people or it will inevitably have worldwide consequences that cause the world economy to collapse.
Just like our extremely intelligent founding fathers devised a way for people to control government (at least until the corporations took it over), now we have to find a way for people to control these huge multinational corporations before they destroy us. Above 80% of the economy is driven by small businesses who do most of the inventing too, not huge corporations whose profit motive also would like to put the small businesses out of business.
Finding a solution to better controlling corporations rather than having corporations control our government is a HUGE and urgent need which cannot be accomplished if one of the most powerful countries on the planet, the US, has a government where corporations have the same rights as people but much much more monetary power to control our government.
It is truly urgent for Congress to overturn this decision by the Supreme Court by whatever the most expedient means is.
